You dont. If it just one switch, like a switch that closes a gap, then hitting it again will not do anything. Once you close the gap its closed forever.
Then there are ares where there are multiple switches, where when pressed in the right order, they will open something. If at any time you mess up the combination, then you need to start all over. The hero will tell you if you made the right order so you will always know.
